Those who’ve considered Apple’s amazing new PowerBook G4 series of portable computers but can’t quite justify the expense would do well to explore its less expensive, slightly less capable sibling, the iBook G4. Available in three flavors, the iBook G4 doesn’t sport PowerBook amenities such as DVD burning and massive widescreen displays, yet all three models feature superb connectivity, subcompact dimensions, and impressive battery life. This particular unit, the entry-level iBook G4 12-inch M9164LL/A, is the most affordable mobile computer in the entire Apple roster.

Featuring a spry power section consisting of an 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processor and 256 MB RAM (expandable to 640 MB), the system packs enough raw muscle for most typical mobile computing tasks. However, the real surprise comes in its 3-D rendering capabilities. Unlike many comparably equipped notebooks, the iBook G4 12-inch features an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 video chipset with 32 MB of dedicated DDR SDRAM memory. Thusly, it will efficiently handle demanding applications such as 3-D drawing and even some 3-D gaming.

At just 11.2 by 9.1 by 1.3 inches and a scant 4.9 pounds, the iBook G4 12-inch is downright tiny. Yet when you flip the lid you’ll find such desirable perks as a full-size 77-key keyboard with 12 function keys and four arrow keys, a trackpad with double-tap and drag capabilities, a smallish but crystal clear 12.1-inch display capable of 1024x768 resolution, and a combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive through which you can burn audio CDs, archive files and play the latest Hollywood blockbusters. For storing your files, Apple has installed a serviceable 30 GB hard disk -- enough space for general use but too little for serious multimedia archiving.

Let us raise the glass: long live the G3 processor, for it is dead. Apple's iBook was the last holdout to G4 processor. It is G3 no more.
Despite some rumors, iBook's G4 processor is a true G4 processor with Altivec fully on-board. While it runs slower (800 MHz vs. 1 GHz) and features smaller L2 cache (256 KB vs. 512 KB) than 12" PowerBook, it comes remarkable close in most performance parameters. They share the same 133 MHz front-side bus and PC2100 (266 MHz) DDR SDRAM.
Even their feature sets come remarkably close. Both sport sharp 12.1" 1024-by-768 LCD, 256 MB memory and 32 MB graphics memory, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports, and 100/10 fast Ethernet. Both lack the PC Card (PCMCIA) slot but can accommodate AirPort Extreme wireless network.
Other than faster G4 processor, just about the only reasons to consider 12" PowerBook are:
- Larger memory capacity on the PowerBook (1.25 GB vs. 640 MB)
- Larger hard disk (40 GB vs. 30 GB)
- PowerBook can drive an external display (dual display) up to 2048-by-1536 via DVI port; iBook can only mirror up to 1024-by-768 via VGA port
- SuperDrive (DVD burner) is optional on PowerBook; it is not available on iBook
- Bluetooth is standard on PowerBook; it is optional (built-to-order) on iBook
- Marginally faster GeForce FX 5200 graphics card on PowerBook (vs. Radeon 9200 on iBook)
- PowerBook is slightly lighter (4.6 lbs vs. 4.9 lbs) and slightly smaller (10.9-by-8.6-by-1.18 inches vs. 11.2-by-9.1-by-1.35 inches)
- You like the PowerBook's anodized aluminum allow chassis better
There are sufficient reasons to get the iBook instead:
- Costs almost 50% less
- It is not dramatically slower
- Longer battery life (up to 6 hours vs. 5 hours)
- Polycarbonate plastic chassis is more scratch proof and offer better wireless network (AirPort Extreme) reception
How is the iBook in itself? For a little over a grand, you get a beautifully designed notebook (similar to iPod) packed with features: combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, optional 802.11g AirPort Extreme wireless network, beautiful LCD, sensible keyboard layout, snappy performance under included Mac OS X Panther 10.3 -- all in very portable form factor. This little book represents a serious bang for the buck.
Pros:
- Very high bang for the buck: good performance and high in features
- Looks beautiful
- Includes almost everything an average computer user needs
- Very portable and durable
- Fantastic wireless reception
Cons:
- Cannot drive external display higher than 1024-by-768 resolution
- To get built-in Bluetooth, you must order from Apple (built-to-order option) -- unlike the AirPort Extreme, you cannot add it later on
- Standard 256 MB memory is based on two 128 MB RAM modules. To add more memory later on, you will need to toss out one of the memory modules (the other memory module is soldered onto the motherboard)

From 5/03 to 11/03 I owned a 14.1" G3 iBook. That was a nice laptop but certainly had some annoying quirks and was really out-of-date (described later). I also wanted to get a smaller laptop and also get Panther. So "upgrading" or "downgrading" to this 12" G4 iBook made a whole lot of sense for me. Here is my review based on comparison to the old G3 iBook.
Performance: From G3 900Mhz to G4 800Mhz is certainly an upgrade. As the G4 features a faster 133Mhz Bus (formerly 100Mhz Bus) and also supports DDR Memory (compared to the old PC100). Applications seem to fire up and run better and everything is just snappier. Also if you have altivec enabled applications, G4 is certainly the way to go.
Technical Improvements: USB 1.1 == USB 2.0, Airport 802.11b == Airport Extreme 802.11g, updated graphics card, tray loading combo drive == slot loading combo drive.
Other Improvements: Panther is a more polished and refined OS compared to Jaguar. OS X has finally matured. The keyboard on the G4 iBook has been improved...buttons press smoother and keyboard has less flex (not to mention the greyish tone makes it look better). Also the LCD display seems a little bit more crisper.
All in all I'd highly recommend this 12" G4 iBook. For this price, it is a tremendous value. You cannot find a comparable 12.1" laptop in the PC world (w/o spending nearly 2 Grand, and most don't come with an optical drive built-in).
I don't see much of a reason to go with 14.1" as it has the same resolution as the 12" (unless that you have bad vision). If you want a laptop with a big display, go with the 15.2" Powerbook (probably the best all-around laptop in the world). If you want a small but still very fast laptop that you can carry everywhere, GET THIS IBOOK! It certainly has the looks and now is a speedster with G4. Can't go WRONG.
(Added 1/11) For the past 3 months I have yet to experience a crash or problem with this iBook. Past generations of iBooks were prone to logic board failures, it seems like Apple finally got it fixed. I can put this laptop asleep for a week and wake it up, and be ready for use within 10 seconds. This is a sweet laptop, and it's coming from a lifelong Windows user (who still uses Windows too).

I was excited to receive the product only to realize that some of the keys on the keyboard wouldn't work. I would press "J", for example, and nothing would happen. Also, some of the numbers on the number pad doesnt work either. I tried connecting an external keyboard to ensure that it was a hardware issue. The external keyboard worked fine.
I am waiting on the new one, hoping that it was a one-off situation.

Got the replacement and it works fine.

Ultimately Satisfied with my purchase. The price is good, screen is big and clear and its light weight. My only complaints are the screen is very shiny and reflects light which can cause a glare and the volume isn't as loud as I would like it to be.

Let me start with the good:
So awesome. Great OS, fabulous improvements to the existing line bumping up the processor speed and adding the thunderbolt port. This is my second MacBook. The first one I had was a 2006 model, not the Pro. I fell in love with it. This one has had the same effect. I had upgraded my old MacBook to Lion, so I kind of knew what I was getting, but hadn't been able to enjoy some of the awesome new multi-touch features. The improvements to the OS have been relatively gradual, but substantive. The feel of this machine compared to the old MacBook is far superior. The Unibody construction is solid, sleek and beautiful. It is everything I'd hoped it would be from a look and feel standpoint, but somehow a bit more sturdy.
For the not so good, I got the stock screen - which is VERY glossy. I mean ... REALLY glossy. It's still beautiful and has better color reproduction than I could ever expect from a notebook. The reflectiveness of the display is only a minor inconvenience if you work in a controlled-lighting environment like me (I prefer it dark) or if you can crank up the brightness.
My real problem with it? The statement of 7 hour battery life is not just mere exaggeration -- it's a lie. I challenge anyone to show proof that through anywhere near normal use can get more than 2.5 hrs out of it. I've got the brightness all the way down to just one notch above 'off' and the keyboard backlight off. The first full charge of this battery got me only about 2 full hours. Enabling the battery timer is useless. The "Time remaining" goes from 4 hours plus to less than 2 hours over the span of about 10 minutes. It's a joke. It's so bad that I'm thinking I only got half a battery or something.
I have an extended battery on a Dell notebook that gives me 7.5 hrs of regular use, and had an extra "slice" battery that attached to a Compaq elitebook that gave me 7-8 hrs. I know what 7 hrs of battery looks like. This ain't it.
My only other complaint is that it gets really hot. There's a reason they aren't called laptops. :-)
If you buy this - don't go into it expecting 7 hrs of battery life, and you'll be perfectly satisfied.
All that being said, I think I'm done buying Windows PCs.
UPDATE:
With the help of some responders to my original review, I am seeing much better results from the battery - close to 5 hrs + of normal use. Leaving the original text of the review intact, but updating the rating to the 5 stars the product deserves. I'm extremely satisfied. Very happy Mac owner. :-D

I researched this purchase EXTENSIVELY via Amazon, Best Buy, other retailers, and my local university (with educational pricing for staff/students/faculty). In the end, I ended up purchasing this machine from Best Buy as the price was the same and I had a line of credit (although I had to pay tax: hey, someone has to help pay for our roads, right?)
In short, I can't say enough positive things about this purchase. This machine is INCREDIBLY fast, the interface is slick (although it takes some getting used to coming from the Windows world - especially window minimizing and the function keys), and with an iPhone 4S and iPad 2, iTunes syncing is a DREAM compared to Windows (on purpose, El Steve?).
The screen is plenty big (if you're waffling between 15" and 17", go to a local Best Buy or Apple Store and play around with each - the 17" has better resolution, but lift them up and check the weight - I prefer the 15" for portability and weight, but you're choice will depend on use), and I ordered the 8GB memory package from Amazon (which should show up any day now). Regarding memory I will say: 4GB is just enough; the OS and apps eat up just about every bit, so I'm looking forward to 8GB.
The backlit keyboard is a dream to type on, the magnetic charger is kid-proof, and the multi-touch trackpad alone is well worth the price (I'm a big fan of the two-finger "reverse scrolling", the back-and-forth swiping in Safari is SO convenient, and the 3/4 finger swiping to bring up LaunchPad and the like is great).
My sole complaint is the lack of USB ports, but only because I'm using a Logitech M305 wireless mouse. If I had a true Mac-compatible Bluetooth mouse this wouldn't be an issue, but in hooking up an external USB drive for Time Machine backups (a Western Digital 2TB) and the Logitech dongle, I'm out of USB ports when I have to sync my iPhone or iPad. But hey, with everything else being incredibly integrated, I'm not complaining THAT much.
Taking and syncing videos and pictures via my iPhone (the local Christmas parade!) is flawless, and iTiVo is a must for those with TiVos.
Regarding apps, take a look at Moom, Alfred, DaisyDisk, AppTrap (for uninstalling apps), and Handbrake.
I may end up getting the Applecare plan (part MD012LL/A), but if I do, I'll get it elsewhere ($244 from other sites vs. $335 from Amazon, just do a search on Google Shopping for the aforementioned part number).
In summary, this machine is already making my life easier with regard to home pictures and video, expanding my family's use of our iPad, and backups. Good-bye Windows, Hello Mac!

Just bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife and have been using it for a few days to get it ready for her. Of note, also recently purchased the E-350 version of the laptop for out college son, so had an opportunity to compare that one to this version with the E-450 AMD chip.(the two versions are very close in price)
My advice---get this one with the E-450 chip. It seems slighly faster when moving around the web and when using programs. The monitor is crisp and bright with great colors, the key board is well layed out, and for me the loud clicks of the right and left mouse buttoms did not bother me.
I did notice that just as with the E-350, sometimes the mouse cursor would jump when near an area you were about to click, but this one does it much much less than our son's laptop. Have not been able to figure out what causes this.
Overall, very pleased and just as with the E-350 this one with the E-450 chip plays HD videos very well. The laptop also has a very solid well built feel.

So I received my computer on Dec 2nd. I am thoroughly impressed so far. The computer was well packeged, It is Mocha! as advertised. It is put together very well. It is very quiet. I almost thought it was broken...but that tells you how loud my old HP was before it died.I really feel that with all it's specifications, that I got an amazing deal. I noticed that the price jumped up to $500 the very next day after I received the computer..so for those thinking of getting one, make sure the price point is under $400. I got mine with Prime two day shipping for $383! I highly recommend the computer so far! Everything works great. It looks sharp and above all, it has all the specs I need for Internet and Photography software that I run. Like some of the others...I did get rid of a lot of the ASUS preloaded software(nothing worth holding on to). And as mentioned before, the right and left key's on the pad are louder then one would like and the pad is not the smoothest I have experienced. I would suggest a wireless mouse. Other than that, It is a great value for those looking for a simple computer for everyday use.

I bought this because I needed a good laptop to take with me on buisness. I didnt need anything fancy, but I needed a good solid computer. This fits the bill. I am currently running the laptop with windows 7 and linux xbunutu. It runs great and I have no problem with either OS. It stays cool all the time. My old laptop would get so hot that it would actually make t very uncomfortable to work with. I look forward to testing it out in field conditions. The battery life is pretty good, I guess I have totweek it some more to figure out how to get this 8 hr life they talked about, but 6 isnot bad either. All in all, it is a good laptop and I ould recommend it.

I've been using this computer for a week now and I really like it. The processor is a stripped down i3 and it handles everyday tasks well, including playing 720 and 1080 HD video. The keyboard is excellent quality. I don't like the touchpad, however I'm not a fan of them in general. The computer comes stock with a ton of bloatware but it is easily removed. Overall I would certainly purchase it again, especially at the $299 price point it was available for on Black Friday.
I've been a ThinkPad user for years but this Asus is of equal quality for sure.

For the price, this laptop is tough to beat. I can't speak for the bloatware referenced for other Acer laptops, as I immediately reloaded it with Windows 7 Pro from my Action Pack. The screen is of the glossy variety and is quite bright. Colors seem vibrant, the viewing angles are decent, and the one I received had no dead pixels. Overall, I like the feel of the laptop; it is fairly light, but in spite of that feels sturdy enough. There is no perceivable flex, and the lid moves firmly and smoothly. I particularly like the finish of the shell's plastic and the chiclet keyboard. I originally thought that the offset touch-pad (due to the 10-key presumably) would aggravate me, but it doesn't. Touch-pad response is quite good, though the button takes a bit more pressure compared to others. Noise levels are very low, and heat does not seem to be an issue so far. I will update with WEI scores when I can and any additional observations as it gets more use. For a general laptop (home use), I can't really see having made a better choice.
As for the four-star review, no one ever gets the max rating from me, so don't let the loss of a star deter you from giving this laptop a whirl.

(Final Update) After using it for a while, probably the least liked component is going to be the screen, which became a bit washed out after I settled in for an extended use. So, I loaded up the "AMD Vision Engine Control" software and dropped the gamma to 0.5, which markedly improved the appearance. For the money, however, I still have zero complaints and highly recommend this laptop for general use. I was even able to finally play the Amnesia demo, something which I had not been able to do on my old clunkers. It wasn't blazing through the frames, but it was at least playable.

The only bad thing about this computer is sound is not loud enough. For having just one speaker it is studio quality sound. With headphones it sounds great. No big deal to hook up speakers. If you talk on skype, headphones are a necessity. It comes with loads of stuff like Speech Recognition that really works, acer games free, great pictures, and etc. The quad processor is super fast, haven't been able to bog it down much. Graphics/screen is the best quality I have seen. It takes 5 dvds to backup system, 2 hours, and really easy. You just type your name in and burn 5 dvds and of course customizing and your good to go. Acer has fixed most common problems with computers. This does not get hot at all. For the features and the price, good luck finding one better. I have researched all of them, this is the way to go. The Toshiba and Sony Vaio where the others that came close, but no cigar. The Sony will break down. Believe me when i said i researched everywhere. Also I know what all the computer specifications mean. Led backlit, energy star, hd web cam, DVD ROM, around 3 hours of hard run time in battery, I like my optical mouse, but the pad is like any other and I think it is better than others. AMD is getting better than intel now, you can barely hear the computer run, excellant range on wifi, the ease of use this provides is great!

Purchased this battery for $36 as a replacement battery for my HP notebook computer, G60 series. The battery fits perfectly, and charged up well. I ran the calibration for the battery after charging the battery a couple of times. The battery seems to hold a great charge, seemingly lasting as long as the original battery did when the computer was first purchased, providing at least 2 hours of use with moderate use when using the HP recommendation power settings.
I don't know that there was an issue, however, about a week after installing the battery, my HP Total Care Advisor indicated problems with the battery. I recalibrated, and all has been good, and have checked the battery several times since then.
I noticed the battery dropped to $29 about a week or so after I bought it, which makes it an even better deal. I was even tempted to purchase an additional battery for that price. If this battery is still going strong in a month, and the price is below $30, I will more than likely do this, as even at less than $70 for two batteries, it is a steal, as I expected to pay $50 - $75 for a replacement battery when my original started going bad.
As a prime member, my 2-day shipping came on schedule, and the battery was well packaged.

UPDATE, April 19, 2011: It is about 3 months later (since I initially reviewed this product) and I am back to change my rating from 4 stars to only 1 star. Unfortunately, the battery will no longer hold a charge above about 1/3, even with recommended recalibrations. It worked well until about a week ago. It was about then that I also started noticing freezing issues with my laptop, requiring hard reboots (forced power downs). Maybe I simply got a dud; however, I will not be buying another one from the same vendor (Superb Choice); I'll be buying one from a difference vendor via "Amazon Fulfillment (LaptopMate)." I'll be back to append this review is the return does not go well.

INITIAL REVIEW: I have not had any problems with this battery, except for one, minor glitch, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. My HP notebook did not readily acknowledge the new, non-HP battery at first. After a second reboot, it did. But then, a few days later when I ran the batter test program, it reported "Replace" in the condition results.
Having some experience with this type of thing in the past, I re-calibrated the battery, via allowing it to drain completely while using the notebook without A/C power, then using A/C power to recharge it completely. After running the battery test again, it reported "Good" for the condition.
Since then, several weeks ago, it has consistently reported the condition of the battery as "Good," and I have not had any issues. The charge lasts as long as the old HP (the one I replaced) battery did when the notebook was new.

I've been waiting for a new computer for my wife, something that she can use both as her desktop computer attached to a monitor, mouse and keyboard and still take along on business trips around the world. Ideally, something she could throw in her big purse and go. The previous edition of the MacBook Air was close, but too compromised in terms of processor speed. The Air is perfect for her.
At this writing, Amazon is selling two versions of the 11.6 inch MacBook Air, an i5 model with 2GB of RAM and 64 GB of SSD storage, and an i5 model with 4GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage. You can order elsewhere a third model with an i7 processor, 4GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD storage--the i7 is the low voltage 2 core version. This review aims at helping the consumer decide if a MacBook Air is the computer for them, and if so, which one. Short answer is the i5/4GB/128GB model is probably the sweet spot of the lineup, but some people can get along with the 64GB model as a second computer, while others will need the ultimate and expensive model.
The strengths:
This computer is fast. The combination of a Solid State Drive (SSD) hard drive and an i5 (or optionally an i7 processor make this the fastest computer I've ever used, and I have a 2011 13" MacBook Pro as my personal computer. The SSD gives it a qualitative responsiveness--application launching, task switching--which any spinning disk laptop will be unable to match. Quantitatively, it more than keeps up with its larger siblings in CPU intensive tasks. For example, my big laptop can compile a large, commercial application I maintain using Xcode 4 in 9 minutes 38 seconds, this tiny sub notebook can do the same in 9 minutes 5 seconds.
This computer is portable. I went to the local Apple Store and compared the 11.6 to the 13 inch MacBook Air, and while the 13 is extremely portable it is not a good fit for a woman's purse. This 11.6 can nearly get lost in a purse, I can imagine my wife hunting around for a few seconds trying to find it. It's ridiculously small. The 11.6 is half a pound lighter than the 13 and a pound heavier than an iPad 2.
Battery life when not under heavy load is good. I can web browse, and as long as I stay away from Flash websites, can do it for several hours. However, under load the 5 hours Apple promises for wireless web browsing becomes sub two hours. If the fan is on, the battery will not last, so it becomes time to figure out which page is running Flash, or which application is hogging all the CPU cycles. For example, I can drain the battery in about 2 hours 20 minutes watching full screen Netflix--which uses the Microsoft Silverlight plugin--over WiFi. I believe Apple no longer pre-installs Flash to pump up their claimed web browsing battery life claims. The larger Air has more room for a battery and thus has a longer battery life. The battery life of my MacBook Pro is certainly at least an hour or two longer under the same approximate load.
The screen is beautiful and crisp. Color balance and contrast seem superior to that of my MacBook Pro's (which isn't bad either). Viewing angles are good but not the spectacular IPS angles of an iPad. I had been wary of dropping down to the 11 inch screen from the 13 inch of my MacBook Pro, but I think I could work all day at this size especially if all I were doing was web browsing or video watching. I wouldn't want to edit videos or do long term software development at this size, but of course there is a Thunderbolt port and with the appropriate MiniDisplay adaptor I could attach it to any monitor. This will spend most of its life attached to a 21 inch LCD.
The keyboard is thankfully backlit. Typing is reasonably comfortable, although I'd prefer another milimeter or two of key travel. Again, this will spend most of its life attached to an external keyboard so it doesn't matter much but I much prefer the touch feel of my MacBook Pro.
The trackpad is large and Lion ready for all your taps, pinches, swipes (one, two, three and more fingers). Apple is renowned for its trackpads and this is no exceptions. Perfect finger feel, no stutters, accurate tracking. The one noticeable difference between this trackpad and the ones in its bigger cousins and the Magic Trackpad is lack of click travel distance, until you get used to it, you are likely to slam your thumb down in hopes of the expected and satisfying button click only to be dissapointed. The Air's button clicking is by necessity a more abstract gesture which usage should make more natural.
Build quality. This is not some shoddy plastic netbook. The unibody construction is amazingly rigid and could be used to bludgeon an attacker in a pinch (and still keep on downloading).
The weaknesses:
Storage size is cramped, especially at the lower price points. I think the 64GB model targets users looking to keep all of their documents, images, videos, music in "the cloud" and while I'm sure people will live in the cloud in the future, most of us live on Earth with our limited speed Internet connections. The larger capacities are fine for many people, including my wife, but not for me, I have too many videos, photos, and music files filling up my MacBook Pro to compress myself even down to the 256GB model.
There are not many ports on the box. Two USB ports, a headset port and a Thunderbolt port are limited. Apple sells the Thunderbolt version of its well regarded but expensive Cinema display which relieves most port complaints and replaces them with "I have to pay a thousand dollars for a monitor with a Firewire port?" complaints. I own this display and it is superb, but it is definitely not for the budget minded or at least those lacking in creative rationalizations. Alternatively, desk bound USB hubs are cheap, and Belkin has announced a Thunderbolt hub, although I have yet to see it for sale.
By the way, I bought the Apple USB to Ethernet adaptor and I do not recommend doing so unless your WiFi is horrible or nonexistent. Turns out WiFi is at least as fast as this adaptor and a whole lot less trouble when dealing with a virtual machine. If anything, make sure you've upgraded to an 802.11N router like a newer Airport Express.
Fan noise under load is a bit loud. Surprisingly, this computer which is dead silent until the fan kicks in can be noticeably loud due to the small space available for the fan vent. At the request of a commenter, I measured the decibel level by laying a decibel meter on the trackpad, and under load it measured 46 dB which is fairly quiet as these things go, my MacBook Pro under the same conditions gave 51 dB. Please take this with a grain of salt as I am not a sound engineer and measuring from the trackpad is not where your ears would be.
The FaceTime camera is weak compared to the cameras in the Air's larger cousins or in the Thunderbolt display. It's OK, but not the spectacular clear HD of the camera in my laptop.
This is not a gaming laptop. The one performance compromise is the lack of a proper discreet GPU. The integrated Intel HD 3000 is OK, probably as fast as the last generation NVidia 320M used in the previous Air, but not something you'll want to throw the most demanding game at. It will be fine for watching video on, and just about anything else but high end gaming.
The maximum memory capacity of the Air, despite being a 64-bit computer, is 4GB and is non-upgradeable. If you get a 2GB machine it will stay a 2GB machine. This is a shame as RAM is cheap these days; I have 8GB on my MacBook Pro. The SSD is upgradeable although online prices for the unusual SSD on a board used in the Air are amazing; maybe in a couple years it will make financial sense to upgrade. The lowest model has only 2GB of RAM and that may be too low for many combinations of applications, or when running a virtual machine.
The lack of an optical drive. I had a USB DVD drive already but many will not. Apple will sell you a pretty one, but in most cases any cheap USB drive will do. The only time my wife used her optical drive on her old computer was once a year to install TurboTax, so this will not be a big problem for her. I did have a problem installing Windows 7 using the Parallels Desktop virtual machine in that the virtual machine would not see my cheap optical drive to install Windows. I ended up using Disk Utility to make an ISO disk image of the Windows installer disk and use that as image for installation. The only other time I needed to use an optical drive in the last year is to get a Digital Download from the Captain America Blu-ray combo pack; iTunes insisted on seeing the registration disk, so I broke out the USB drive. My advice here is to not buy an optical drive but wait to see if you actually need one, and if you do need one, first try to use the included software to use another computer's optical drive.
The lack of an SD slot reader. I use the reader in my larger notebook frequently, although less often as I take more pictures with smartphones. The larger Air has a reader, and while USB SD card readers are cheap, they are also awkward, often slower and easily lost.
The expense. On a per pound basis, this is the second most expensive object I have ever purchased. My wife will mainly be using it to run Windows software, and I guess I could have gotten a netbook for traveling at a third (or less) the price. i am not going to go into a deep review, as there are already a lot of reviews out there covering the same things. but I will talk about special things that other reviews may not have covered. I personally have owned the 2010 11" and 13" airs, and I currently own the 2011 macbook pro 15" and 2011 11" air. the 15" is about 2x the processing power as the air (according to geekbench), but it lacks an SSD for faster daily tasks.
-- on Engadget, they recently covered that the 11" air has a faster SSD than the 13" ones. not a difference you'll notice but still a nice excuse to purchase a smaller one :) (it was something like 240mbps vs 180mbps estimated)
-- the battery life on the 11" is actually down from the previous generation by about 30 minutes on battery saving settings. Last gen can get about 7 hours, this one is just over 6 (about 25% brightness, web browsing only). Also, air's battery life plummets if it does moderate to heavy processing (flash, photo/movie editing, gaming), the pro's battery life goes down, but by much less.
UPDATE: I am getting around 4.5 hours of ~4 tabs in safari (no flash), Skype IM chat, and mail client running. about 40% brightness, no backlit keyboard, no sounds. kind of subpar for me. similar to the alienware m11x where the 1st gen had super battery life, 2nd gen increase power but decrease battery life, and 3rd gen has both. hopefully apple follows suit.
-- online benchmarks show that the 2011 11" air is about 2.5x faster in processor speed than the 2010 model. however, if you never used an i5 or i7 processor before, know that you will also be able to multitask a lot better than the old core2duos. for example, you can edit in iMovies and photoshop at the same time (something that will lag the crap out of the old generation).
-- DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE SCREEN SIZE. with Lion, applications can take advantage of its fullscreen function. For example, for many native applications like Safari, Mail, Calendar, etc, you can fullscreen them and they'll take up the entire screen, however, they dont actually take up the main desktop screen, but a whole new screen on its own. if you have multiple fullscreen apps, you can use 4 fingers to flick between them, fast and efficient. I owned the last gen air 11" with 10.6 SL, and it was a bit frustrating having multiple windows open, i usually have to minimize most of them. Now, you can browse in full 11" screen, and use 4 fingers to flick to check your mail.
-- keyboard and trackpad have more of an "umfph" feeling to them. a bit more resistance than the older models. the 2010 air was my first mac, and i was disappointed a bit by the light and cheap feeling keyboard, but the 2011 made it right.
-- FYI, if you never owned a macbook, the "instant on" feature is actually in all the unibody MacBooks and Pros, but they are just a bit slower than the air's. so don't think of it as a feature only the air has, it's just a bit faster.
-- you can't change anything in the air once bought, unlike the pro.
-- screen quality is actually worse than the Pro line up. Yes the air has more pixel density, but the vertical viewing angle is pretty bad. it is NOT made of the same screen as the Pro and iPad (IPS), however, it is a matte screen so a much better screen in the sun. i owned both the 11" and 13", the viewing angle problem was much more noticeable on the 13" just because the screen is bigger. I always found myself adjusting the 13" screen every time i move a bit.
-- 2gb ram is enough to run lion just fine.
-- sound seems to be slightly louder on the 13" vs 11". 11" sound is TINY. i always turn it to max whenever i'm watching videos. headphones are a must.
-- if you are deciding between a pro vs air, in general, i would say go with the pro if you do professional work with photo/movie editing, hardcore gaming (at least 15in), or if you plan on buying or already have a tablet. go with the air if you are a light user, want a tablet replacement. Owning an air and a tablet is a huge waste of money.
-- I would personally recommend the 1.6ghz, 4gb, 128ssd 11" macbook air. I believe that is the most useful and "bang for the buck" you can get vs the rest of the lineup. but everyone's preferences are different.
UPDATE: there has been 2 instances where the air would have its fan turned on full speed as if I was doing intensive work when i am only doing light web browsing. very rare though. fixed by shutting the system down and restarting.
All in all, my only complaint about this air is the price. the $1200 macbook pro 13" vs the $1200 11" macbook air, the air has a better hard drive, but thats it. it's using less material to make, a slower processor, smaller battery, small and worse screen, less ports, i would think Apple can price it less than the macbook pro. basically, less everything, but paying the same price because it has a good design. thats my 2 cents at least. $899 for the entry model would shut me up :)

Overall the HP G6-1b60us is a good balance of features, performance and price - only the loud cooling fan keeps it from being great. The display is bright, the keyboard has a good feel and the large off-center touchpad makes a lot of sense for anyone that operates a mouse with their right hand. The mouse buttons below the touchpad are a bit stiff, but for light usage don't seem overly difficult. Performance is about what I expected from a budget laptop model with Windows 7 being ready for use in just under 20 seconds (prior to loading any of your own programs). The computer is very easy to setup out of the box with smart and simple setup menus to guide you through initial startup of the system, and fortunately HP has left a lot of 3rd party trial software off the system - saving you time from having to remove software that just slows your system down from the start.
The one standout weakness of this computer is the constant, unwavering system cooling fan noise. If you are someone bothered by the constant "shhhh" noise of a small computer fan, this computer is NOT for you. In a quiet room the fan will be very noticeable - particularly if the laptop is on a hard surface such as a table where the sound is reflected back at you. The one setting related to the system fan (the ability to disable the fan from a setting of "Always on" in the system BIOS) seems to have no effect on the speed or time of operation of the fan in this model. The fan is louder than every high-performance laptop computer I have used at work over 10 years, and is perhaps necessary for the AMD processor in this system, but it is the only disappointment in an otherwise solid entry level laptop. A summary of pros and cons as I see them from my use of system are below.
Pros:
Good ergonomics - Bright display, solid keyboard feel, well placed touchpad
Very good sound - The Altec Lansing speakers produce very clear sound and volume for an entry level system and are placed in a smarter location than many laptops that place them on top where they collect dirt and other debris
Sturdy construction - Large display hinges feel solid, the unit doesn't flex easily and materials used in construction appear of good quality
Good performance - The system is reasonably quick for any standard computing needs, and could be further improved with replacement of standard 5400 rpm hard drive
Cons:
Loud system fan noise - Constant, unchanging fan noise can be quite noticeable in quiet rooms or on hard surfaces
Few hardware configuration options - Related to the fan in particular, no ability via BIOS or Windows settings to manage cooling fan operation even by reducing CPU performance
Poor access to memory/hard drive - If you want to add memory or change to a faster hard drive or SSD in the future the access panel is snapped in by plastic tabs that are guaranteed to break off with more than one removal
Other information:
Windows Experience Index ratings for the system running Windows 7 Premium 64-bit as configured out of the box are: Processor: 5.4, Memory: 5.9, Graphics: 4.6, Gaming graphics: 6.2, Primary hard disk: 5.9
In conclusion I would recommend this laptop if the price is under $500, but only for someone not annoyed by the kind of steady noise a computer fan can produce.

My favourite definition of quality is "fitness for use", more importantly especially when buying a laptop, headache free use. Whilst this laptop may be many things: solid build, nice design, HP support assistant software two thumbs up and all. This laptop should also come with a note saying headache attached as the battery stated "77% available, plugged in not charging" within 48 hours of its receipt thereby turning my smile into a frown :(.
I did research some laptops before choosing this one so there are some good points about this laptop and they are as follows:
Price: Not bad, but not great, USD $449.99 it was sweet enough for me to say yes to, however I quickly turned sour when I saw that within 72hrs of my purchasing the item the price had dipped to $379.99 USD. I wanted to cry! That's what I would have called a great price. This however only lasted for approximately 48 hrs before skyrocketing up to $479.99 (Had even considered buying another one $379.99, but these hopes were quickly dashed, felt as if I was on the Fed with prices moving up and down so sudden!y)
With regards to overall build etc a previous reviewer "MTM" had a really good take on it so I'll just copy portions of his/ her review and add my own spin.
Pros:
Good ergonomics - Bright display, solid keyboard feel, well placed touchpad (I would like to emphasize the touchpad, its like a fine metal grating, so the traction is out of this world (No more slipping and sliding)
Very good sound - The Altec Lansing speakers produce very clear sound and volume for an entry level system and are placed in a smarter location than many laptops that place them on top where they collect dirt and other debris (Whilst this may be true in a "quiet environment" the speakers otherwise perform in a noisy environment,headphones will be required, but I will put a hold on blaming HP for this as I believe its a trade off due to the fact that the speakers are SRS. So for some people the sound may be a CON)
Sturdy construction - Large display hinges feel solid, the unit doesn't flex easily and materials used in construction appear of good quality (I'll definitely agree to this. Like a Rock! Ok well maybe I exaggerate but it does not flex like those of another very popular Manufacturer's, when picked up by an edge.)
Good performance - The system is reasonably quick for any standard computing needs, and could be further improved with replacement of standard 5400 rpm hard drive. (Emphasis on the word "reasonably" whilst surfing via firefox, admittedly I was seriously multi-tabbing and had an excel sheet open Total Ram usage was noted as having reached 3.53GB of a total 4GB, with CPU usage frequently reaching 100%....should I be frightened I believe the problem is the processor as it has a 1.9ghz base with a very dismal 1 MB level 2 cache, Phoeey!).
Cons:
Loud system fan noise - Constant, unchanging fan noise can be quite noticeable in quiet rooms or on hard surfaces (Only a problem if you suffer from some sort of neurosis, or are trying to sleep with it on in the room! Didn't mind it most times.)
Few hardware configuration options - Related to the fan in particular, no ability via BIOS or Windows settings to manage cooling fan operation even by reducing CPU performance (Not really that big of a deal except in the 2 instances noted above)
Poor access to memory/hard drive - If you want to add memory or change to a faster hard drive or SSD in the future the access panel is snapped in by plastic tabs that are guaranteed to break off with more than one removal (Not sure haven't checked)
ADDITIONALLY:
PROS
Try connecting the lappy to a big screen via the HDMI port and maybe just maybe you may forget that the machine came with a defective battery. AMD Radeon(tm) HD 6480G Discrete-Class Graphics with up to "2037MB total graphics memory". They didn't lie at all HDMI all the way, plug and play, don't buy another laptop without it
-The Cam and Mic are fairly ok, no complaints!
CONS
The laptops display has limited viewing angles as the it was built with the intention of being a power saver, this is not really a biggy unless more than on person is trying to watch a movie at the same time.
The laptop display itself may be suspect as I've noted lots of horizontal lines flickering across it from time to time (but truth be told I was doing a windows update of the video drivers at the time so may be the reason for the isplay being antsy) and I cringe every single time....who knows maybe apart from a defective battery I got a defective display as well? Raises eyebrow.
With regards to the DVD-RW drive it works but not so well if you're reading a disc with lots of pics or one that's been burn't for e.g. say more than 2 yrs ago the ROM starts vibrating and spinning at incredibly fast speeds. you can literally hear the disk coming into contact with the walls of the compartment an of course the explorer window freezes.
You may ask why based on the above didn't I send back the laptop.
Response I live in the Caribbean and it cost an additional $41 USD to ship it to my country. So thinking about the $41 USD to return it to the states and the other $41 USD to get another laptop with possibly of a defective everything?
Better the devil you know than the one you do not!
I contacted HP customer support and they shipped me a new battery free of charge. Paid $9 USD to ship it out of the US. I was however able to return ship the defective battery to HP free of charge via Fedex! (Good going HP at least you got that right)
My opinion this would be a steal of a deal at under $400 USD....saw Anthony D paid $399.99. Lucky guy!
Whats missing:
-Bluetooth
- A better processor probably one with a 3mb cache 2.3 ghz
With the above this laptop could easily have sold for $480 or so.

I ordered this for my Dell Laptop when the original one started going bad. The Dell website wanted too much for a new one and most reviews for the Dell brand cords were poor. This memory is great for my new MBP 2011, i5 13", also when Mac OS detects 8 Gb of memory, the graphic memory increases up to 512 Mb (from the original 384 Mb w/ the integrated intel hd3000 chip)

Just replaced my 2 month old 15" macbook pro with the newest i7 model they released a few days ago. So my old 8GB wasn't compatible anymore. Only about 5 months ago that older style memory cost me not quite three times what this newer RAM cost.
Got it installed without any issues in the laptop, booted up fine, works fine.
Best price I found, can't believe how cheaply I got this new laptop up to 8GB.
Edit - worked great on my new 2011 Mac Mini as well, now has 8GB.

I ordered this screen protector and it fit my mac book very nicely but I had major issues with air bubbles. I removed a lot of them but there were still some very noticeable air bubbles. I ended up taking it off and throwing it away because there was no way to get rid of the bubbles. I tried to squeegee them but they would just disappear then come back or multiply into bigger bubbles. I do not recommend this item.

Save your money. You'll never get this on without getting tons of air bubbles. It was a waste of $10 (shipping included.) This thing is so charged with static, everything clings to it before you have a chance to get it to the screen. I didn't even get it half way on and had to throw it away.

i use passmark dot com for my benchmarks and this laptop gets a real nice score for the price. This speed PLUS the 17.3" LED screen is a no brainer to me

I searched HP laptops because HP rocks .... hp 1117 cl is the Model I was sent... I found this monster 5GB 4GBmemory ? 17 inch LED ? ... for this price ? wow ..yea I jumped on it... hoping its not a lemon. I got it in the mail ... the wife popped it open and was extatic. I saw it and went bug eyes F...N S..t it huge Open its Clam face and wow all this screen ... 10 key layout .. very sleek. The face was a Charcol Grey shiney n nyce. I did the basic setup no prob .. internet is always a hastle for me but once I got it up... stream city ... youtube loads slow but thats youtube ... everything else ran smoothly ... the Necessary Updates got stuck the first time I shut it down N I panicked thinking "here we go" .. but unplugged it and started it over and boom all updated in no time. I think Ill keep an eye on this and buy another one for myself. Ive had it for 4 days and its new ... lets hope this review doesnt change .... DONT SLEEP ... GET ONE ::)

I did a lot of research before selecting to purchase two of these computers as Christmas presents. I was a bit worried about what I would get for the low price I paid for these on Amazon.com, but so far have been very pleased. Both machines booted up and worked equally well right out of the box. The machine boots up faster than the the thinkpad I use for work (less than 50 seconds even after a windows update, 32 seconds out of the box). The screen is clear and bright and the Intel HD 3000 video is everything needed for everyday use (of course this is not a gaming machine). Wireless connectivity worked great one floor up from my router with no hiccups after a heavy testing. One of these went to my 10 year old son and he can play internet based games like Minecraft and Roblox with ease and with good video response. The included software is nice, especially the webcam utilities which was a big hit for with my son, as he can make videos with special effects with ease. Construction is sturdy, but not something you would want for heavy business travel. The mouse is ok and works well, but not as nice as I have used on more expensive machines. DVD playback worked and looked great. DVD recording was tested making recovery discs and worked fine, though it took a while. Performance is pretty good for a machine in this price range and much better than I expected. In short, this is a nice machine for everyday home use and general purpose business computing. It offers much better performance than I expected for the price and am very happy with it. My five star rating is with respect to the price I paid for this and other machines I reviewed in the same price range, but not compared to higher end products.

Delivery from Amazon was awesome. Unit itself is great. I especially appreciate the 10 key pad and the monitor display is outstanding. Boots up quickly and very quietly.

I purchased this Sony Vaio to replace the Atinquated piece of hardware the resembles a laptop that is slower than molasses,(pentIII CPU) enough said about the dinosaur, when I got my new laptop I couldn't be happier with the speed of shipping and the ease of setting it up for the first time... my brother said he had many problems with his Vaio and wouldn't recommend buying one, but I had already bought it when he found out I did, let's just hope he just got the ONLY lemon in the bunch, as for now I LOVE THIS LAPTOP. I does everything I want a computer to do and then some like shuffeling music or picture albums with the swipe of your hand motion, (works with the camera), watching hd movies, playing my music while I work or surf the web, etc.... very good buy for the price I paid $390.00...hope this helps you decide, so far I would recomend buying this laptop....

I got this on Cyber Monday, so it was obviously on sale. This is ok I guess. The main letdown to me is that it's slower than I thought it would be. You would think that it would be fast since it's dual core, but it's not. At least, not as speedy as my other Laptop. Also, the Touchpad seemed like it needed to be broken in, cause I was having a lot of problems with it when I first got it, but it's working fine the next day.
What I do love about it is all the USB ports. I personally feel like you can never have enough USB ports! There's 4.
Overall, this isn't a bad purchase. For the nonsale price, I'd buy something else.

The key to the HP G4 Pavilion series is that it uses the affordable 1.65 GHz AMD E-Series CPU, a less-expensive choice for CPU but one that is designed for laptop use. Another advantage, according to Athlon, is that the CPU will use less power, saving your battery up-time compared to something equivalent from Intel. However, at an average of six hours of battery time, I'd say that this is only average.
The unit itself is lightweight, under 5 lbs. It comes with wireless LAN, a 14 inch screen, 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM. A built-in webcam and a cable-free method of transferring photos from your camera (digital reader) make this a great choice for travel involving web communication and uploading photos. (This is how I used to use my laptop when I went overseas, so I can appreciate these two features in particular.) There is also an HP application "Quick Web" which allows you to access the web before the laptop is fully booted.
There is a DVD reader/burner, and output to HD TV.
I'd rate this an excellent, lower-cost choice, especially for travel because of the reasonable weight and built-in features such as wireless, webcam and DVD player. I'd rate it less powerful for graphics-intensive applications such as games, so if you are considering a replacement for a desktop, and you require powerful graphics, this would not be my first choice. This laptop is clearly designed for people on the go-- light weight, wireless web access and webcam ability. The battery life means you need a place to recharge, especially if you use WiFi, and some features are missing such as Bluetooth and USB 3.0 (this has USB 2.0)
Bottom line: a good budget choice for laptop, not a full replacement for a desktop if you are looking for graphics speed. Battery life is average.

Got this from lighting box deal for 379 USD. For a budget laptop, it worths the money. At the beginning, I bought as a gift for my wife. But she think it's too big for her. So I got the Apple Macbook Air for her and sell this to my friend.

I bought 3 of these for my three grandaughters. You can install the amazon app store on it and get android apps that install easy and play very well. Amazon gives a paid app for free I believe daily. I was able to install apps like Angry birds on them for free and they work very well. I too, was impressed with this tablet, for the money it is a very good buy. I know it's not an IPad and I would not compare it to it either but, out of most budget tablets, this is one of the best. I played with each one for a while and watched videos online. I did not have any problems. The screen is resistive but yet i was able to scroll and type without the stylus unlike some others tablets that i tried out first.I did a lot of searches on the internet and compared many tablets in the same category.I also bought several and had to return them. For me, this was the winner.

I had thought and looked into getting an iPad or one of the other larger tablets, but realized that if I was going to spend that much money that I may as well by a laptop. Yeah, they look cool and all, and the number of 3rd party things for it are out there, but I realized that I really didn't want something that big in size. I wanted something that I could easily carry around, see what email I had awaiting for me to read at some point, could sit and read a book, and play a few games. I had looked at some other 7" tablets, but there was just something about them that just didn't give me the desire to buy them, then I came across this one.
It's heavier than I expected, and takes longer to start than I would like, but it works for me.I have had no trouble connecting to wifi networks, the apps that I have added work great, going from portrait to landscape is quick, playing video from YouTube and elsewhere works fine, and I have even been able to make Skype calls with no problems.
The problem that I have had with it is that the battery doesn't last long, and it would of been really nice if they had made it a little bigger or added a clasp for the stylist. I also don't like the fact that if you lay it onto a table the screen will automatically switch to landscape.
The Apps store it uses (GetJar) has plenty of stuff to keep me happy, but I am not looking for it to do a billion things. So far I have enjoyed the e-reader (Aldiko) as it is easy to read things.
If you need all of the bells ; whistles of the iPad, then buy an iPad. If you are looking for something that will do the basics quickly so you can do other things in life, this is a good choice...

Sorry for the length, but I feel buyers should know... I own two Dell desktops, a Toshiba laptop, and an Asus gaming laptop. I feel that I am very adequate with technical knowledge and I handle most of my support issues personally (i.e. hardware upgrades, repairs, as well as software issues). I researched desktops and laptops extensivelly before I made any purchases. I recently had to purchase a laptop for a graduation gift for my son. I wanted to get him a good laptop for college, which could handle all his classwork and also provide some entertainment. I found numerous reviews on laptops, and two of the most relaible sources listed Asus and Toshiba as tops in reliability. This does not suprise me. I love my Asus gaming laptop. My Toshiba laptop had issues when I tried to use the recovery disk to take it back to its factory state. Toshiba's customer service was useless and I really feel that they were running a scam to get me to service the laptop through them. I was not happy with them, thankfully I could fix it myself (Clean install of operating system because their recovery disc, the one that came with it, and the two I had to purchase directly from them, were corrupt and would not install). This brings me back to Asus. Who is Asus, but the manufacturer of top hardware for other companies. They are the manufacturers of motherboards and such for companies like Dell and HP. When you buy a Dell or HP, you are most likely purchasing an Asus product. Therefore, why not just buy the Asus instead. Take a good look at their warranty... not bad, is it? I cannot comment on their custumer service, because I have never had to contact them. From other sources I hear that they have one of the best support services in the US. Moving along, this takes me to this Asus model. I struggled with my decision to purchase this model due to the ratings. I always take others personal experiences into consideration. However, in this case I decided to follow my own instincts and disregard what others said. After searching high and low, this was a great price for a laptop with these specs, and from a manufacturer who I have solid faith in. I bought it. I took the time to set it up properly... which if you have ever done this, it is not a plug and play process. It is a grueling 3-4 hours of creating recovery discs (you can just use the partition, but why take the chance), updating hardware (drivers and such) and fully updating windows. You MUST fully uninstall the security software (virus, firewall, etc...) that comes with the laptop if you decide to go with another security software company. DO NOT JUST PUT YOUR OWN SECURITY SOFTWARE ON WITHOUT UNINSTALLING THE FACTORY STATE SOFTWARE! (This could be the cause of a lot of issues) To fully uninstall, I suggest you go to that company's support website and follow their directions for uninstallation, including using their downloadable tool if one is provided. When you have two different security software products installed on the same computer, you could create a wicked war that will cause operating system errors, failures, and unfortunately crashes. Hmmmm, sound familiar? While this process is time consuming, it should be followed no matter which laptop you purchase! After following all of this, I found this laptop to be excellent. No errors, no failures, and definitly no crashes. Not to disregard other buyer's issues and reviews, no company is perfect and lemons do make it to the market. It is up to you to decide, but in my opinion, I have purchased a wonderful laptop, with great specs, for an amazing price. I am so happy I followed my instincts. Congratulations Asus, you have once again raised the bar!

I don't know why there are so many bad reviews about this computer.I recently bought this computer and I am very happy with this product. ASUS used to make motherboards, they know what they're doing I have owned SONY VIAO, Toshiba, HP, and others and I am well acquainted with good computers and bad computers. I am very happy with this computer. The i5 processor has been able to handle my every need, it also has a turbo processor which has helped immensely.
I travel a lot (usually get about 6hrs, which is a lot for a screen this big) and the battery life is great. The option to have the computer running on high performance or battery saving, I think that is great depending on what you're doing. The screen size is great. I wasn't to comfortable with the keyboard at first, but after a week I was.
The only thing I can truly complain about with this computer is the camera. The video quality is medium, which is not what I expected of ASUS. Not a problem however if you don't use it too much. If it is a problem you can buy a good one on the internet from $40. Overall I am very happy with this computer, other than the camera I have no problems. I will update if there is anything wrong with it.

I recently purchased a Sony Vaio laptop and was looking for a way to keep my laptop cool so that it wouldn't overheat and cause problems like others have reported happening to their laptop. If your looking for something basic to keep your laptop cool and cheap. This is your guy. It does what it's supposed to do. Also I heard alot about cooler pads being too small this one holds my laptop without it slipping and my laptop is 15.5".
CON: Very flimsy feeling like I could break it without putting forth more effort regular handling of it is okay but I wouldn't be overly rough with it. The fans on the cooler pad are also open on the bottom so say if you want to put it on your bed or a soft surface you can but the fans won't work. It has to be on a hard surface in order for the fans to work.
I can't really complain it does what it is supposed to and I guess I am getting my money's worth. Cool thing is that when my laptop is powered down the fan is off so I don't have to unplug the USB cord that connects it to my laptop. While the cooler is on it's a cool electric blue color like your at the carnival. Not really important but hey....that's my 2 cents.

What a piece of junk!
When I took it out of the box, it was much, much smaller than I expected.
Though, that isn't the part that bothered me. It is made out of the thinnest, cheapest plastic possible. (Think plastic disposable party cup, or molded plastic packaging that items are packaged in. Its very very flimsy.
The fans are also exposed on the bottom. It doesnt seem dangerous or anything, but I can't put it on my lap by any means. It keeps bending, causing the fans to press against the piece of plywood I have it sitting on. The wires are also exposed, making even less durable.
The only good thing is that it is very quiet.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

I've only been using this laptop for a few days. But it's a winner. Great screen, speakers,keyboard,webcam,very easy to set up. Windows 7 is a snap to use. (I've been using Vista, before that XP Pro and XP.)The laptop comes with 4gb of ram. I ordered two 4gb. to increase the ram to 8gb. I found the upgrade here on Amazon for only $29. That's cheap enough. I would recommend Acer to anyone that wants a good computer that doesn't cost a lot of money.

I bought this laptop a year ago. My laptop died and I needed a new one quick. Money was tight and so I shopped around(big box stores, online, etc...) and I kept coming back to this one. I love this computer it exceeded my expectations. I waited a year to review because I feel this is the best way to measure how well an electronic device works. It's easy to write a good review 3 days after you bought something when it is still shiny new. This laptop took a beating and still runs prefect, not one issue. I use it for work and school everyday for at least three hours at a time. Acer makes a great product at a great price. Don't let the low price fool you this was well worth the $500. I ran ArcGIS 9.3 (full version)right out of the box no problem. I also used it for class on 3d game design and 3d online worlds, not one hiccup.
I bought this as a cheap stop gap measure to get me by till I got a better laptop and never traded-up.

The Dell Latitude D600 is really a nice little laptop. It has numerous great features like built-in wifi capabilities, 512MB of memory, a highspeed processor that makes this laptop just speed along. I think its only flaws-- and minor ones too-- is the limiting 30 GB hard drive that can get filled up far too quickly and it's small screen. While 15.6 is a standard size, it can be hard to read sometimes nontheless.
Yet this laptop is a great bargain for the price as is. Still, once I got it I decided to upgrade the hard drive and get a mouse to replace the sometimes troublesome pointing stick. If you need a good laptop but don't have a major budget, this is the one to get.

First, Apple's service is terrific! The computer is incredibly fast, and there seems to be a big difference between the new 7200 RPM hard drive models versus the slower hard drive model that they had before the refresh came out. I won't go into lengthy detail on this laptop, as the other reviews on the 15 inch would be quite similar. Just remember there is no SD card slot, and instead you have to purchase an inexpensive ExpressCard adapter, which allows you to have quite a bit of flexibility on what you want to plug in there.
Now here's the thing: I've returned this laptop two times over a dead area on the lower right of the space bar key. Great support, and Apple had no problem exchanging the first laptop and refunding the amount on the second laptop. Note that the problem I experienced with the space bar key occurred on the two laptops I had, and I was also able to replicate the issue on the models in the Apple Store and in the Best Buy Store. This is only unique to the 17 inch model, and the space bar works perfectly fine on the 13 or 15 inch models. This is strange to me since they're supposed to all have the same keyboard.
If you're a typist that pecks, then this won't bother you. But if you are a fast typer, and one who doesn't pound down on the keys, this probably will affect you.
Here's the problem: The first morning I started typing an e-mail, and got something like this, " HelloAnn, how areyou doing?" When I pressed the space bar key, the computer didn't actually recognize my 'press.' Granted, I type lightly, but I've never had a problem with a key press not being recognized. Try this test out yourself at an Apple Store or Best Buy Store with their 17 inch models.
Lightly press the lower right edge of the space bar (very lightly, but enough so that the space bar actually goes down). Do this 20 or 30 times in a row in a text editor so you can see the cursor move as you press the space bar. Sometimes the space bar will move and sometimes it won't, like righthere where there are fewspaces. The last sentence was just an example, but that's what happens when you press the space bar but the computer acts as if you didn't press it. It drives me nuts that the space bar does not always work. Now do the same test on the 13 and 15 inch models and notice that the space bar works every time, even with the lightest press (on the lower right hand portion of the space bar key, where touch typists usually press the space bar key).
So I ended up returning the 17 inch models (after 2 times, thinking the keyboard was just defective). After the second one was still defective, and the models at the stores had the same problem, I'll have to get the 15 inch model or wait until Apple fixes the lower right hand portion of the space bar key on the 17 inch models.
I'm picky, and for many buyers they won't even notice the space bar not being recognized because they type really hard or they type in the middle of the space bar. But for touch typists, usually the space bar is pressed on the left or right sides, and a press should be a press, even if it is light. I'm probably just going to get the 15 inch model, as it doesn't have the space bar issue.
Edit December 22nd: For further information, see the Apple discussion board from multiple folks at the official Apple site where people are having similar issues with the space bar key (including the Airs and other lines). Apparently Apple is forgetting to put the rubber pads on the underneath of the space bar -- there's a picture on the first page of the forum of what it looks like. If you're experiencing the same issue, I would call Apple support so hopefully they can start shipping with keyboards where the space bar actually works 100% of the time.
Since Amazon doesn't allow outside links, just go to google and type in the following search words "dead spot on space bar macbook pro" and it's the first link at the top that comes up.

Originally, I was very frustrated with this product. It was not working correctly, and I was panicked thinking I had paid over $2,000 for a computer that was either not user-friendly, or (previously being a PC user and non-techie) I just wasn't technically inclined enough to use a Mac. Thankfully, I took my new MacBook Pro to the Apple Store (who has incredible customer service, but is over an hour away) and they will repair it.
Amazon gets a 1 star for sending me a defective product. The hard drive was damaged. The product itself gets a 4 star. I worked on one at the Apple Store and was impressed. It made me very excited to see what my MacBook Pro should and will do. It could be upgraded to a 5, but I have yet to see what it is fully capable of. Once it is returned and I can use it when it's working properly, I can better assess.

The reviews here are for the MD313LL/A, yet the computer is actually MD314LL/A, which has a faster processor and bigger hard drive.
The MD314LL/A features a 2.8 GHz i7 processor, integrated Intel 3000 graphics and a 750 GB hard drive. I've never owned an Apple laptop before, so there was a little bit of a learning curve. Now that I'm getting the hang of it, I'm beginning to like OSX Lion better than Windows. Programs can be run on separate virtual desktops, and the computer never misses a beat when several programs are active. Switching between different desktops or open programs can be done by merely sliding three fingers forward on the large touchpad. Control-clicking on words or phrases in Safari brings up a context sensitive menu which allows the user to select to view a dictionary, Wikipedia, or do a Google search in a pop-up window in the browser. You can also ask the computer to speak the word or phrase, if you have any doubts about pronunciation. Safari also includes links to a library of plug-ins at extensions.apple.com, which includes a plug-in for Flash, so you can now watch free Hulu videos and other videos online. The network preferences window makes it far easier than Windows to set up a list of public DNS servers to bypass the sometimes slow, glitchy ISP servers.
This computer is completely silent. I wasn't even sure it had a cooling fan until I downloaded a utility to monitor the fan speed. This computer is super fast, and the base plate never gets more than lukewarm. The light weight, small footprint, lighted keyboard, crisp screen and speed really make this computer shine.
The attention to detail is really outstanding. The cooling vents on the back of the base are completely covered by a sliding plate when the lid is closed, keeping dust out of the innards. The power supply has flip out legs for winding the cord for storage and the prongs can be removed so it can be used as a brick type supply with the supplied AC cord. The computer also has a green LED battery status gauge built into the left side of the base, which is activated by a flush button. The lid snaps shut quietly even though there are no cheesy stick-on rubber bumpers, and it is held closed by magnets. The built in light sensor shuts off the keyboard backlighting and brightens the display in bright ambient light. The computer also has a 3 axis accelerometer to protect the hard drive from damage. The attention to detail is why Macs are more expensive than the various PC clones.

Packaging:
Very impressed with the packaging. I was very impressed how well this thing was packaged. A well thought-out design protects the content and minimizes customer dissatisfaction.
First impression:
I am sure everyone who are interested to buy this product, has gone to best buy and played with it a bit. well, the new MBP right out of the box is 90% more impressive and attractive than that of the store. It is a good looking piece of machine.
It came with a charger, extension cord for the charger, instruction book, screen wipe, and nothing more that I needed. I took the cord out, and started charging it. A full charging is highly recommended before use. after a few setup screens, I am up and running.
Upgrade time:(Make sure you shut down your machine first)
I ordered this machine with a 8GB memory upgrade (DDR3-1333) from Crucial. I did not want to pay a premium for the apple upgrade. Instead, I bought a dual channel kit separately for $39.00. I highly recommended Crucial brand as they use Samsung memory chips and for one more reason I am telling you next. I will not go through how to change the memory(a lot of youtube videos available). when I took out the existing memory out of the MBP, guess what chips they use on the memory sticks? yes, guessed it right, samsung.And I also have reasons to believe that the RAMs are OEM version of crucial memory judging by physical similarities. but, that is just my opinion, not a fact.
User Experience:
After the upgrade, turned on the machine and few beeps and clunks later, it started flying. I repeat, it is flying and my machine is currently running over 600 threads without any sign of slowing down. virtual box? NO PROBLEMO! this little beauty is a little beast in performance. I have installed over 50 applications, running dozens simultaneously, 10 more browser windows open, and it just happy. I can't say enough about the multi-touch gestures. No other laptop I have ever used that had such ease of switching between applications, scrolling, searching, sliding and navigating. I have never used Mac OS before(not more than a few minutes of playing around at best buy), and I felt it was very intuitive to use and learned fairly quickly. I still don't know a lot about the OS, but it has not stopped me from doing what I need to do.
What could be better:
Not that I cared much, but the standard power cord is a little short. I bought a sleeve to keep it safe, and it does not allow room for the extension cord that comes with it(big and bulky).
It has good speakers that play nice sounding beats. But the 15" plays them better.
The outer shell is aluminium, but don't think you can't scratch it. I spent a sleepless night just cause it put a small scratch under it by accident. But, I am over it now.
Advice to the people who wants to take the plunge:
I felt like it was the best $1100 I spent on a laptop. I could not justify it before using it as I always thought that Mac is more style than performance and usefulness. I admit that I was wrong. This machine offers more features and performance per dollar than I thought. This is a well-built machine that would serve me longer than any other laptop ever has for me. I have half a dozen windows machines in my house including a 990X extreme desktop that I built 4 months ago. I love windows, but I have learned that I can like both (Macbook pro and PC).

Picked this up at a local retailer for a mere $233 to replace a P4 desktop running XP in our kitchen. While I wasn't looking for a notebook, I could not resist the price tag in order to declutter our kitchen counter. Dual core processor is slower than the P4, according to Windows 7 ratings, but video is far superior, sound is ok, good enough to replace the desktop speakers. I have always had trouble with XP hybirnation, so using the desktop required a full bootup since I shutdown the desktop when not in use. Win7 and this notebook are ready in seconds...There are certainly better (faster) notebooks out there for $100 to $150 more, but for the price and its functionality as a web browser, video player and email computer, I couldn't be happier with this notebook...Battery life is supposed to be 5.5hrs, so far that is a disappointing 2 to 2.5 hrs on full brightness...may get better with some cycles, but again, since it will be primaraly be used plugged in, not a huge deal...Bit slow, nice clear 15.6" screen, 5 lbs weight is good and I was shocked at finding out that a memory upgrade from 2Gb to 6Gb was only $20. I was going to wait a while on this, since it seems to defeat the $233 price, but I went ahead with this easy upgrade...I also plan on taking advantage of the built in bluetooth with a compatible mouse

I've had it a week, and if I havn't smashed it against the wall, beaten someone with it, or shot it by next week I'll be suprised. It comes with this Norton "anti-virus" which seems a lot more like just a virus to me, shutting down the computer all the time (I had to re-install windows just to write this review) because I cut it off to try to avoid some of the "updates" it decides to install every few hours that requires the computer to shut off. If I have any spelling mistakes, it's the computers fault because I can barely see what I'm doing since the the moust sometimes works, but sometimes decides to zoom out so far I need a magnifying glass to read it, depending on it's mood I guess.Maybe all laptops are this bad, I don't know but whoever designed it, right now I would really like...I need to calm down.

This 11.6" 1.0Ghz [1.33 turbo] netbook packs a punch for its size and low power consumption. The AMD C-60 mobile dual core processor runs well enough to play videos without skipping and efficiently enough to stay charged for as much as 7 hours. I opted for this model over the earlier 722-454 version for several reasons: its dual core processor, 2GB of RAM installed/ upgradable to 4GB, and 320GB hard drive.
If you're still not sold on a netbook over a tablet or standard laptop read on.
Tablets are still recreational devices, fun, chic in cafes, but they're still mostly for playing games and looking busier than you actually are. They have a few practical features, but all require a keyboard, which is an extra expense, and conveniently included with a netbook! If you do a lot of writing, typing, or work related proposals and editing, the DataViz optional word processor for Android tablets won't replace MS Office. It has limited functionality and frequently crashes without auto-saving. If you're thinking about an iPad or AirBook, remember, you're buying into a complete product line of computers, music, videos and applications which are virtually useless on non-Apple devices. If you buy one Apple product, you have to buy them all. This is great for some, but expensive for most.
As I said, if you're comparing this netbook to a traditional laptop, this model doesn't require you to make a lot of sacrifices in your performance expectations. Just remember, netbooks don't have CD/DVD drives, no 10-key, and smaller screens. One complaint I have with this model is that it's missing a built-in bluetooth antenna. Irritating, but easily remedied with a low-profile USB dongle in one of the three available USB ports, which is more than on most netbooks. I would recommend spending the extra $25 to upgrade the RAM to 4GB when you purchase it. It's very easy to install yourself--no under the keyboard poking around required. There's a single philip's head screw in the middle of the bottom plate, unscrew it, slide forward and you'll find the single DIMM looking right at you. Anybody who played with shape blocks as a kid can figure it out. All in all, this is a good buy for 329.99. It's cheaper than most tablets and standard laptops and you can use it for actual work out of the box, no extra $50 keyboards required. Please reply if you have any other questions I can answer.

I was very happy with my 10.1" Asus 1001P-PU17 but I cracked the screen while on vacation and need a replacement fast. While browsing Amazon I noticed this Acer was a bigger screen, more RAM and a bigger HD (320GB vs 250GB Asus) another big plus was Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Windows starter for just a few dollars more than the Asus sell for. I am extremely happy with it so far. It is actually lighter and thinner than the Asus and the battery life is about 6hrs (which is less than the Asus so that is the one compromise I made). The screen is very crisp and Netflix looks really clear. Highly recommended and this time I bought accidental protection for $25 through Safeware. The only negative is the glossy case - I would have much preferred something textured that does not show smudges.

These stylus are very well made and work very well, if all you want to do is find an alternative to pressing the onscreen keyboard. However, these stylus are totally useless for use with a drawing program because the rubber tip will not glide across the screen. If you use your iPhone outdoors and you are wearing gloves, these stylus are for you. If you want to draw, then you'd be better off with a stylus with a soft foam tip.

This review has stirred interest beyond the value of said stylus.

There are three (3) types of touch screens, buy the correct stylus for your screen.

Resistive-type screens lack the clarity of other touch screens but they tend to be very durable and can be used in a variety of environments. Resistive-type screens are the most common in use today.
Capacitive screens are resistant to outside elements, making them very durable, and they still maintain a high clarity. Unlike resistive and surface wave screens, which can be used with stylus, capacitive panels must be touched with a finger.
Surface wave touch panels are the more advanced of the three types, offering the highest clarity. But they are more easily damaged by outside elements.
The iPad has a capacitive touch screen, your gloves won't work, and that plastic stylus from your old Palm PDA won't work either. Buy a capacitive stylus for your iPad.

The cutting-edge AMD "Fusion" processor produces amazingly-smooth graphics (DVDs, Youtube HD videos, Netflix, Hulu, etc). I run complex financial risk simulations on my DV6 laptop, and they complete within seconds. My previous laptop, an Intel Duo Core from Geteway, took minutes to finish the simulations, but this new HP laptop finishes 5x faster!
Naturally, internet browsing is awesome, as web pages seem to open within the blink of an eye. I never realized that an upgraded laptop could make my life so much easier. The laptop is incredibly fast and powerful, yet it produces virtually no heat.
I also watch BluRay movies from a projector connected to my DV6. Again, I have to compliment the amazing graphics capabilities on this laptop; completely smooth video
Hulu and Netflix caused my my old Intel Duo-Core laptop to stall and choke, but this new AMD-powered laptop runs completely smoothly on this laptop! If you have broadband internet, you will never see any flickering or missed frames.
At this price, the DV6 is the best value you will find. It runs better and has a better build quality than similar laptops that are usually priced in the $800-$900 range.
I think HP and AMD did a fantastic job with this laptop. I am a very happy customer.

I just received this computer today and to tell you the truth it is an awesome computer. The display screen is flawless and just gorgious with its brightness. The updates took less then 1hour so it was pretty fast. The A6 quad core works awesome, this computer can handle anything you throw at it with awesome resolution. The speakers are so loud and sound great. The keys are nice and easy to hit, they're not like some computers which has them hard so you have to press pretty hard to use them but rather this once has it just right.
This 500dollar computer out performs a 800dollar computer any day of the week. If your thinking about purchasing a computer for school, entertainment or just to play some hard core gaming but at a reasonable price, not like those $2000 alienware computer, then this is the computer to buy. You cannot go wrong with this computer. Do Not be afraid of the 1.4ghz processor, its a A6 quad core! Thats four cores that work consistenly to keep up with your demand, and the weight of the work is distubited evenly to the four cores so it hardly heats up. Its literaly impossible to hear the fan. Im trying my best to listen to it and it makes almost nooo noise whatsoever.

I bought this laptop as a family utility machine, it sits in my living room and at least 4 people use it regularly. I was looking for something that was new and had new components, this has a 2nd gen Intel I3 processor along with a USB 3.0 port and bluetooth 3.0. The major pro to this machine is the price along with some new features. The screen display and keyboard are nice as well. It also has a 720P Webcam with facial recognition software and fingerprint reader(it doesn't always work though). For those that care about noise this thing doesn't really make any, my previous laptop fan ran a lot.
Cons
I took a star off because the machine has lots of crap software on it. It would be nice if you could have the option of just getting it shipped with the OS only. There are also 3 partitions on the hard drive, 1 called HP recovery, 2nd which is FAT32 for HP tools, and a 3rd for everything else. I'm still working on removing crap software, but it still runs fast and boots in 20 - 30 seconds.
Other
This is not a gaming laptop so if you want it to play the latest and greatest games look elsewhere. You should be able to play most web games or anything that doesn't require a dedicated video card.
Overall I am very satisfied with the purchase. I researched for about a month straight and ended up on this one based on highest functionality for the price combined with the newest hardware.

I updated to 5 stars because I am very satisfied with this machine. The processor is really fast and I really like the USB 3.0 backups are super fast. I don't use the webcam or transport the laptop much so I can't really comment on that. For the price its an excellent machine.

This laptops is awesome.
This laptop has the sandy bridge version of the i3 which has really strong integrated graphics card. and very quick processor.
I was actually able to get around 35 FPS on Civilization V on low setting which means I could run smoothly at medium settings, which also means that you can play alot of other games like MW2, Fifa, NFS, Portal, Mirror's Edge, Red Alert 3, and games at this intensity on low settings. Fifa will surely run on medium settings.
Aside from the specs, The touchpad is a little bit rough at first as if you're touching very fine sandpaper, but after a while of use you get used to it and realize that it actually works better than glossy touchpads on other laptops.
Also the USB hubs are a little bit hard to get extensions in them, but for me that's a plus so that the USBs don't fall off easily.
The screen is really vibrant, although I haven't tested it in direct sunlight. You will also notice that there is a lot of space beyond the display in the front (a good .5 inch on both sides and like 1.5 inches on the top.)
The speakers are actually really loud and crisp clear.
There is bluetooth built in. And there is two USB 3.0 hubs.
It ways a little bit more than your average 15.6 inch laptop, which I guess is due to the brushed aluminum finish on the back and surrounding the touchpad.
Overall this is the best laptop purchase I have ever made.

I bought this laptop directly from dell Financial Services auction on ebay. I did not even know that they have it here on Amazon Marketplace too. Even though the description said manufacturer refurbished the laptop I received looked like new. It came with power adapter and a Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD and built in Intel PROSet Wireless Card. Absolutely no bloatware is included.
Now this may not be a top of the line machine but it is pretty adequate for home and school or even Small Home Office use. The neat part is that once you boot up the machine for the first time it would automatically install Windows XP after going through some preliminary steps. It even gives you option to enter setup and configure things but you are better off leaving the machine alone to do its thing and install windows XP or whichever operating system it is bundled with unless you're techie. Once windows finishes installation you can pretty much install anything you want. I have so far installed Open Office, MS Office 2003, Firefox, Chrome, Avast Anti Virus, Trusteer Rapport security Software and many other productivity softwares and the machine boots up and runs smoothly.
It does not come with webcam so I installed Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 and Microsoft Lifecam Cinema and either camera runs smoothly even on HD modes. I use Lifecam Cinema more often because it's stand is perfect fit for D630 bezel as opposed to the Quickcam Pro 9000's stand which tend to wobble.
I will advise you buy this laptop directly from Dell either here on Amazon Marketplace or on ebay where it is listed under Dell_Financial_Services. You will likely receive a laptop that will be like new but more importantly you will get 30 days warranty.
This laptop is of right price, size and specs: 14" bright LCD, 2GB Ram, 80GB harddisk space and 2GHZ Intel Dual Core processor that is more than adequate for most home, school and or Small Home Office use. It is sturdy and sleek looking too.
There is one thing that Dell scrimped on here: the tiny single speaker that is barely audible! I use an external Frisby USB laptop Speakers. I also use headphone when I am on the road. It is worthy to note that this tiny speaker belies a powerful sound card that only becomes apparent when you put on a headphone.
NB: Don't forget to switch on the wireless radio or you will not be able to use the wifi connection. The switch is on same side and next to the headphone jack. It is switched off by default. Once you switch it on it will detect a bunch of wifi hot spots including yours, if any. Select your SSID from the displayed options and enter your router's WEP Key and you will be good to go. I have at;t 2WIRE Wireless Gateway and the WEP Key is the ten digit number directly below the serial number located on the side or bottom of the router depending on whether it is standing vertically or lying on it's side. The built in wireless card is powerful. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who may be on budget but not willing to compromise on quality and performance.

I bought two of these. The first one was in excellent condition, really impressive for a "refurb". So when hubby murdered his laptop by spilling a drink into it, I thought this D630 would be the perfect replacement for him. When it arrived, we were both a bit disappointed. It functions correctly but has a loose lid/screen that can wobble and some sticking keys and generally looks quite used. He's satisfied enough to keep it, partly because he doesn't want to be without one for any length of time, and partly because we've had positive experiences with off-lease Dells in the past even if they have a wart or two.
My personal disappointment was that after receiving the first one, I expected the same level of quality from the second one because it was sold by Amazon -- not a marketplace refurb seller where you can never be sure of what you'll get until you open the box.

This is the second Acer I've bought in the last 6 months - my niece needed a computer, so I gave her my AS5253-BZ602 and got this one for myself. Both have been great purchases. Set-up was easy, there was some bloatware, but not an excessive amount. It runs fast and handles multi-tasking well. The screen resolution is very good, as are the speakers. This laptop has two, which is an improvement over my old Acer's one. There are 3 USB ports but no HDMI, which I don't mind, but some might.
One odd note: numerous websites state that the memory is DDR3 1066MHz but mine came with 3 GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM.
Summing up, this computer is excellent for basic use and at $350, a real bargain.

I bought this computer as a secondary computer to augment my online business, because I tend to overdrive processor speeds with too much work all at once. This has now become my primary work computer as it is not only faster but more reliable when processing large files than my netbook computer is. This is a great laptop for the price. It functions beautifully for basic use (school, work, surfing the web, etc.). I have had absolutely no trouble with mine, and would highly recommend this product to everyday users.
I've seen a couple of bad reviews simply because users purchased this computer with the intent to make it their "gaming" computer, and then were disappointed with the outcome. Check the specs and your game requirements first. If you truly want a gaming computer, you probably shouldn't be looking at Laptops in the first place.
It's a great computer at a reasonable price. If you just need something for work, school, and surfing the web, it's perfect.

This laptop is so awesome. I've always had a desktop, so I'm excited that I was able to purchase a laptop at such an inexpensive price. First of all, it's advertised as having 512MB RAM and a 40GB hard drive. Well, I got 1G of RAM and a 60 GB hard drive. Secondly, it works so well, as if it's new. And thirdly, for this to have been a refurbished computer, it looks good with very little to no scratches. Several people's comments have not been to pleasing, but I would blame the seller, not the laptop. I didn't purchase the cheapest one. I read all of the sellers' comments and chose the one I thought would give me an honest buy. I am very happy with my purchase.

Wanted a laptop to replace my 3-year old Toshiba Satellite, which slowed down and froze up until it died. Replacement was to be for family use primarily, with basic applications such as word processing, banking, shopping, browsing etc. So far, I have had no complaints.The I3 processor is quick enough for my needs, the system boots up very quickly (about 20 seconds or so - a far cry from the Toshiba), and I've had no crashes or freezes so far. Build quality could have been a bit better....this Dell feels....well, delicate. You don't feel like it can take any sort of abuse...which is not a real issue with me because it remains on my dining room table anyway. Dedicated numeric keypad is a definite plus, along with USB 3.0 connectivity, Bluetooth and WIDI. Overall, a competent and capable family laptop,

We purchased a DELL Inspiron 15 from Costco for Christmas. During it's first use, on Christmas morning, it repeatedly failed to create a set of restore disks as the DVD ROM made horrible noises. I then spent over 2 hours on the phone with DELL's outsourced tech support, running diagnostics, reinstalling drivers, adjusting registry settings, rebooting, and trying to create the restore disk again, and of course asking him to repeat everything 3 times because he was impossible to understand. He even tried to blame the "burning software" (you know, the Windows recovery disk creation tool) for the problem! After all of this, he was finally convinced that the DVD ROM was defective. He then explained that this 3 day old laptop will now need to be shipped to DELL's service center, where they will replace the DVD ROM (if necessary). With expedited processing, this will take 2-3 weeks, after they receive it. Fortunately, Costco's return policy allowed us to return it to the store, so we did. We then walked out with a similarly spec'd laptop from HP. We should have bought the HP in the first place, but we were lulled in by the promo Costco was running on the DELL. Lesson learned.
Aside from the defective DVD ROM, the laptop just felt cheap. The keys sort of wobble under your fingers as you push them, causing you to be especially gentle when typing. While probably adjustable, the touch pad was extremely over sensitive, resulting in erratic cursor movement, selections, and difficulty with pull down menus. There did not appear to be any way to remove or replace the DVD ROM, hard drive, or memory from the underside of the laptop like most others I have used. Most likely, these parts must be accessed from the top after the keyboard is removed, but I didn't try. The battery was easily removed using two release sliders on the under side of the laptop. The display was clear and bright, and had no dead or stuck pixels, although there was no latch to hold the display closed.
The amount of pre-installed trial and information gathering (listening, shopping, surfing, etc... habits) junk on this computer was overwhelming. As with most new computers, there was only a "Drivers already installed on your computer" DVD, and no OS installation disks.
Long story short: spend a few extra dollars for a better brand.

The Dell Latitude line of notebooks are well built business machines. The Latitudes and XPS lines are a tier higher than the entry-level Inspiron Series.
The case is constructed of metal with plastic trim along the LCD monitor. There are 4 USB ports which allow for a variety of peripherals to be attached such as portable hard drives. There is a headphone and microphone jack and an outlet for a monitor. The keyboard is comfortable to the touch. In addition to the mousepad, there is a pointing stick with 2 buttons below the space key, allowing for either to control the cursor. The 'spill proof' keyboard is one of the biggest assets (I have only spilled a drink on it once, where I just wiped off the keyboard without a problem in function).
The WIFI capabilities is reliable and easy to set up. The hard drive is quiet, as is the optical drive. The strike zone hard drive is resistant to light drops.
Performance of the notebook is excellent with the Dual Core processors. This notebook easily handles virus scanning, working on a MS Office document, internet browser and listening to music without any problem. The integrated graphics allows for basic games like Tiger Woods Golf, Mafia, NHL Hockey, the Godfather, for example.
Battery life is very good for the 6 cell (about 4 hours).
One of the greatest attractions that I have for this line of notebooks is the lack of 'bloatware' - unnecessary programs that are installed into your computer (trial programs, multiple internet service providers, advertisements, etc).
Overall, with a spill resistant keyboard and drop zone hard drive, this notebook will take the daily knocks of the regular commuter. This is no Panasonic Toughbook but it will survive your daily use.
VERDICT
Highly recommend this notebook.

I used the same laptop at work for the about the last 3 years, and it is a work horse. I can buy a brand new commercial laptop for couple hundred bucks more, but I wanted the reliability of the professional business laptop. I have to say this used business machine Laptop works well except for 3 problems: First, the battery only lasts 5 minutes, second, the DVD burner drive work sporadically (DVD door doesn't eject consistently, and it doesn't always detect the DVD or CD in it). Handed the laptop to my 11 year old daughter few weeks after purchase (Christmas gift), so I did not find out about these problems until 2 month after purchase. Contacted the seller, but the warrantee had expired after 30 days of purchase, so I have to buy a battery and drive on my own. Third thing, the XP pro operating system was loaded on the computer, but the recovery disks were not included; I hope the hard the hard drive doesn't crash sometime soon.

The interface selection is decent, Dell didn't cut corners here, even though more than just 3 USB ports would be nice.
For ~$600, an i3 was ok in Summer, but with the Year drawing to its end and Intel's new Ivy Bridge CPU's showing up in a couple of months, it would have been nice if a discounted i5 with its HD3000 could have made it into this model.
There's no dedicated GPU at all, so you're stuck with the i3's anemic integrated graphics... ewww.
As for the screen, I find the 1366x768 pixel resolution poor, no matter what fancy names they give it. But Dell isn't alone with this, everything from 11" to 15" comes with this atrocious resolution these days.
To me, this resolution would be effective in an entry level gaming machine with a lower mid-range GPU like the HD6630M or GT540M, since those GPUs do a lot better with low resolutions.
This notebook however has no GPU, so you won't be playing any games with it - leaving it for people who only do office work and maybe watch an occasional video. For office work, 1366x768 is extremely poor, especially if you're stuck with Microsoft's latest version of Office with those big ribbons... there is very little screen space left for Excel and Word to display what you're actually trying to work on. You can forget about legibly displaying a whole page of a document. In Excel, you'll be in a hell of scrolling-up-and-down-and-back-and-forth.
So, I consider this display a mismatch for the only role this laptop can fulfill. (if you want nothing more than browse the web, you could of course buy a much lighter weight netbook, or, god forbid, a tablet)
Lastly, its not exactly light weight for the screen size, there are 15.6" notebooks that weigh less.
You are probably able to configure this model differently on Dell's website, but there can be drastic price differences in either direction, even for a unit with identical spec, cause Dell's own quoted prices never include tax, so on Dells site your bill jumps when you reach checkout, on Amazon it doesn't. At other times, Dell may have cut its prices, while the sales channel is still full of product with the old price. So do yourself a favor and double check :)

haven't opened the box yet. my partner paid $500 at best buy for the peacock blue model. she declined any enhancements, extended warranty, anti-virus, setup.
